America 250: The 250 Greatest American Rock Bands of All Time
As the United States of America reaches 250 years of independence, there’s not better time to look back at America’s history of rock and roll bands.
RELATED: 250 Years: America’s Greatest Gifts
America is the birthplace of rock music, thanks to American pioneers like Goree Carter, Fats Domino, Sister Rosetta Thorpe and T-Bone Walker who developed the rock and roll sound, before Chuck Berry came along and gave the new genre international appeal.

While the genre isn’t exclusively American, several American rock bands have proudly carried rock’s rebellious nature forward over the last eight decades, reflecting that same attitude that led to our forefathers to a revolution for freedom in our nation.
In honor of America’s 250th birthday, here’s the 250 greatest American rock bands of all time. This list includes bands only – no solo artists – meaning artists like Tom Petty and Jon Bon Jovi won’t appear, but their respective bands will.
This list also excludes bands with dual nationalities, like Fleetwood Mac, but includes bands like Foreigner, thanks to their New York City origin.
These rankings were determined using a mix of data, history and editorial judgment. Each band was evaluated by record sales, legacy, influence, cultural impact and where each band fits in the larger story of American rock music.

Santana brought Latin rhythms, blues, jazz and rock together in a way no other American band had before. Their Woodstock-era breakthrough and 1990s commercial revival give Carlos Santana and company one of the most unique résumés on the list.
5. Van Halen (1972-1999, 2003-2020)
Van Halen changed the game with Eddie Van Halen’s guitar work, David Lee Roth’s showmanship and a run of hard rock staples that still sound larger than life. The momentum of the classic-era lineup didn’t stop either when Roth was replaced by Sammy Hagar in 1986. Their mix of musicianship, fun and radio dominance makes this high placement easy to defend.
4. Aerosmith (1970-Present)
Aerosmith gave America its own Rolling Stones-style rock juggernaut, then found a second life in the 1980s that propelled them well into the 21st century. Their mix of bluesy hard rock, radio hits and long-term cultural relevance keeps them near the very top.
3. The Beach Boys (1961-Present)
The Beach Boys are one of the most important American bands ever, pushing harmony, studio craft and pop-rock songwriting into new territory. Their influence reaches far beyond surf music, especially because of Brian Wilson’s ambition and the lasting legacy of Pet Sounds.
2. Eagles (1971-1980, 1994-2016, 2017-Present)
Few American bands have a catalog as commercially massive or instantly recognizable as the Eagles. From country-rock roots to arena-sized classics, their songs helped define the sound of ’70s American rock.
1. Metallica (1981-Present)
Metallica lands at No. 1 because no American heavy band has done more to bring metal into the mainstream while still maintaining its credibility. Their combination of influence, sales, catalog strength and global reach makes them the standard-bearer for American hard rock and metal.
