DNA Of Death

What’s happening: Your genes might have a bigger say in how long you live than your kale smoothie. A new study in science suggests DNA influences lifespan far more than previously believed. Researchers analyzed data from siblings of centenarians and, after factoring out accidents and infections, found that genetics could explain over 50% of the differences in how long people live, far above earlier estimates of 25% or less. Co-author Uri Alon, PhD, notes prior studies underestimated genetics because they included deaths unrelated to aging.
What it means: Think of genes as setting the “lifespan range,” while lifestyle determines where you land within it. Alon estimates that your habits, good or bad, shift the number by roughly five years either way. In practical terms: if your DNA points to 80 years, top-notch wellness might push you to 85, while poor choices could drop you to 75. Wondering if you could hit 100? Experts say your family tree is a far better guide than any supplement routine. Consider this both permissions to ease up on extreme bio hacks and a scientifically valid reason to blame your ancestors.
So, unless you love exercise, there is no point. 😉
