ROCK MOMENT – Blondie “One Way Or Another”

Blondie’s “One Way or Another” is one of the most recognizable songs to emerge from the late-1970s New York punk and new wave scene. Released in 1978 on the band’s third studio album, Parallel Lines, the song combined a catchy guitar riff, Debbie Harry’s cool and confident vocals, and a slightly unsettling story about obsession. It became one of Blondie’s signature songs and helped establish the band as a major force in the emerging new wave movement.
The inspiration for “One Way or Another” came from an unpleasant experience in Debbie Harry’s own life. Harry has explained that the song was partly inspired by an ex-boyfriend who had become obsessed with her after their relationship ended. His behavior was disturbing enough that Harry eventually began feeling like she was being watched or followed. Rather than simply writing a straightforward song about fear, she transformed the experience into something playful, sarcastic, and ultimately empowering.
That contrast is a big part of what makes the song so memorable. The lyrics describe someone determined to track down another person, but Harry delivers them with such attitude and confidence that the listener is left wondering who is really in control. Lines about seeing someone “walking down the street” turn an ordinary situation into something tense and unpredictable.
The recording was produced by Mike Chapman, who helped give Parallel Lines its polished but energetic sound. The album represented a major step forward for Blondie, whose earlier work had been closely associated with New York’s underground punk scene. “One Way or Another” fit perfectly alongside the album’s other hits, including “Heart of Glass,” “Hanging on the Telephone,” and “Sunday Girl.”
Although it was not as commercially successful as “Heart of Glass,” “One Way or Another” became a lasting fan favorite and a staple of classic rock and pop radio. Its combination of infectious melody and dark subject matter perfectly captured Blondie’s ability to turn everyday experiences into unforgettable pop songs.
More than four decades later, “One Way or Another” remains one of Blondie’s defining tracks—a song that sounds fun on the surface, but has a much darker and more personal story underneath.
