It comes down to the scarcity principle and has been documented by psychologists since 1975. It’s basically wanting something more when it seems harder to get. Psychologists found that people thought the exact same cookies were more appealing when there were only two left instead of ten. It’s true! I know that I’ve done that myself when it comes to baked good or even ice cream at an Ice Cream shop.
It works with people, too. Saying “I can probably make Friday work” can sound more attractive than “I’m free Friday” because it makes you seem busy and in demand. It works because it makes you sound like you have a bunch of things on the go and are a sought after commodity!
