ROCK MOMENT – Van Halen “When It’s Love”
By 1988, Van Halen had successfully entered a new chapter. Sammy Hagar had replaced David Lee Roth as lead singer in 1985, and the band’s first album with Hagar, 5150, had gone to No. 1. For the follow-up, OU812, Van Halen continued mixing Eddie Van Halen’s explosive guitar playing with keyboards, big harmonies and a more melodic songwriting style. One of the album’s biggest successes was the power ballad “When It’s Love.”
The song began with Eddie and Alex Van Halen. Eddie reportedly presented Hagar with a demo built around keyboards and drums, providing the musical foundation for what would become “When It’s Love.” The band then developed the arrangement at Eddie’s 5150 Studios in California, where OU812 was recorded between late 1987 and early 1988.
Hagar wrote lyrics around one of life’s most familiar but difficult questions: How do you know when you are truly in love? Instead of offering a complicated explanation, the chorus gives a wonderfully simple answer—you will feel it, but you may not be able to explain it. The words also acknowledge that nearly everyone is searching for something to fill an empty space, even though people often have trouble talking honestly about their emotions.
Musically, “When It’s Love” combines a warm keyboard opening with Alex Van Halen’s powerful drums, Michael Anthony’s bass and the band’s trademark backing vocals. Anthony’s high harmonies help make the chorus sound enormous. Eddie’s guitar does not dominate the entire recording, but when his solo arrives, it is melodic and carefully constructed. Eddie later described the solo as a nod to one of his greatest influences, Eric Clapton.
Released in June 1988 as the second single from OU812, “When It’s Love” became the album’s biggest pop hit. It reached No. 1 on Billboard’s Mainstream Rock chart and climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it one of Van Halen’s highest-charting singles.
The accompanying performance-style video also received strong exposure during the MTV era, presenting Van Halen as a confident and unified live band. Hagar’s powerful delivery, Eddie’s unmistakable smile and the group’s natural chemistry helped sell the song’s emotional message.
“When It’s Love” became a regular part of Van Halen’s concerts and remains one of the defining songs of the Hagar years. It proved that the band could create a heartfelt power ballad without losing its muscular rock sound—and that sometimes the best answer to love’s biggest question is simply, “You’ll know.”
