ROCK MOMENT – Def Leppard “Armageddon It”
By the time Def Leppard released “Armageddon It” in March 1988, the band was riding one of the biggest waves in rock history. Their landmark album Hysteria had already produced a string of hit singles, but few expected another track from the album to become a radio staple. Yet “Armageddon It” proved that Hysteria was loaded with hits, becoming the album’s sixth Top 20 single in the United States and helping cement its legendary status.
The song’s unusual title often catches people’s attention. While many assumed it referenced the biblical end of the world, the phrase actually came from an inside joke during rehearsals. Producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange frequently asked the band, “Are you getting it?” whenever they struggled with a section of a song. Guitarist Steve Clark jokingly twisted the phrase into “Armageddon it?”—a play on words that sounded like “I’m-a-gettin’ it.” The band loved the joke so much that it eventually became the song’s title.
Like every track on Hysteria, “Armageddon It” underwent an incredibly meticulous recording process. Sessions for the album stretched over three years as Def Leppard faced one obstacle after another. Most notably, drummer Rick Allen had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident on New Year’s Eve 1984. Rather than replace him, the band stood by Allen as he learned to play a specially designed electronic and acoustic drum kit using his feet to perform many of the parts his left arm once handled. His remarkable comeback became one of rock’s greatest stories, and his performance on Hysteria proved he hadn’t lost any of his power or precision.
Producer Mutt Lange was famously demanding, often requiring dozens—sometimes hundreds—of vocal takes to achieve the layered harmonies that became Def Leppard’s trademark. Guitarists Steve Clark and Phil Collen stacked countless rhythm and lead guitar tracks, creating the huge, polished sound that defined the album. The result was a song that sounded massive on arena sound systems while remaining catchy enough for pop radio.
Lyrically, “Armageddon It” is much lighter than its title suggests. Rather than focusing on destruction or doom, it’s essentially a flirtatious rock song packed with clever wordplay and swagger. Joe Elliott has said the title was never meant to be taken literally, adding to the band’s playful sense of humor.
Released as the sixth U.S. single from Hysteria, “Armageddon It” reached No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming one of Def Leppard’s biggest crossover hits. It also received heavy rotation on MTV, where the performance-based video showcased the band’s energetic stage presence during the Hysteria era.
Today, “Armageddon It” remains a fan favorite and a concert staple. Alongside classics like “Pour Some Sugar on Me,” “Love Bites,” and “Animal,” it helped make Hysteria one of the best-selling rock albums of all time, with more than 25 million copies sold worldwide. More than three decades later, the song stands as a perfect example of Def Leppard’s ability to combine razor-sharp hooks, polished production, and arena-sized rock energy into a timeless classic.
