How Often Do We Fart In A Day

An Australian research team tackled the challenge by tracking the gas passed by 6,400 people and collecting data on 360,192 toots. Instead of using complicated devices, researchers created a simple solution called “Chart Your Fart.”
Participants used a discreet smartphone app to record each fart as soon as possible after it happened. The app allowed researchers to gather real-world data without making people feel uncomfortable or changing their normal habits. Participants included people ages 14 and older, but those who had recently made major diet changes were excluded since that could affect their usual gas patterns.
Other researchers have explored different ways to measure flatulence, including smart underwear equipped with sensors that automatically detect gas. Another option involved placing a device in the rectum to track gas buildup but that approach had a major drawback: people often hold in their farts until they’re somewhere more socially acceptable.
So, who farts the most?
The study found that people passed gas about five times a day on average. The median was slightly lower, at 3.8 times per day, meaning a smaller group of especially gassy participants increased the overall average. The pattern was similar across ages and genders, with most people about 79% reporting between two and seven farts per day.
Researchers also discovered that farting follows a daily rhythm. Gas production gradually increases throughout the day, reaching its highest point in the evening after dinner. Smaller spikes happened in the morning between 6 and 8 a.m., after lunch between 2 and 4 p.m., and again later at night between 8 and 10 p.m.
Good to know!
