If you’re looking for a job as a line cook, you might have more competition than ever. A new social media trend is romanticizing life in the kitchen after the trailer for Tony, the upcoming Anthony Bourdain biopic, captured Gen Z’s attention. Many young people are inspired by Bourdain’s journey, seeing the line cook lifestyle as gritty, authentic, and exciting.

But professional chefs say the reality is far less glamorous. Long shifts, few breaks, intense pressure, and the physical and emotional demands of restaurant kitchens are all part of the job. While the film celebrates Bourdain’s passion for food and his rise through the culinary world, it also hopes to shine a light on the real kitchen experience and encourage people to embrace the values he championed: empathy, community, and connection through food.

The question they all ask themselves is ‘What would Tony do!’ in terms of empathy, community, and connection in the food world.
