The Latest Dating Trend Has Gone Viral

Just when you thought you’d learned all the dating buzzwords like ghosting, breadcrumbing, zombieing, here comes another one: the “maybelatership.”
A maybelatership is exactly what it sounds like. It’s when someone says they might want a relationship with you… someday. Just not today. Or next week. Or anytime they can actually commit to.
Dating experts say it’s becoming more common because dating apps have created endless options. Instead of saying yes or no, some people keep potential partners in romantic limbo while they figure out if someone “better” comes along or if they’re eventually ready to settle down.
To be fair, not everyone in a maybelatership is being dishonest. Some people genuinely aren’t ready for a serious relationship because of work, family, or personal reasons. But experts warn that others may be intentionally putting you on the back burner and simply stringing you along without ever intending to commit.
So how do you avoid becoming someone’s “maybe”? Ask the tough questions early. Be honest about what you’re looking for, set clear boundaries, and don’t be afraid to walk away if someone can’t give you a timeline or keeps moving the goalposts.
Life’s too short to spend it waiting for someone else’s “maybe someday.”
