Police in the Mexican state of Jalisco are searching for a mystery vigilante after at least five suspected motorcycle thieves were found duct-taped to lampposts around the city of Lagos de Moreno. The bizarre incidents have gone viral online, earning the unknown crime-fighter the nickname “Batman.”

The alleged thieves weren’t just tied up. Some reportedly had the Spanish word for “thief” written across their faces, along with drawn-on mustaches and cat whiskers. In several cases, the motorcycles they were accused of stealing were left parked nearby, almost like evidence at the scene.

Authorities aren’t laughing, though. Even if the men are suspected of theft, police say they’re legally being treated as victims while investigators work to identify the person, or group responsible for the vigilante-style justice. The restrained men were cut free and treated for minor injuries.

So far, no arrests have been made, but investigators have reportedly identified vehicles that may be connected to the incidents.

While social media has embraced the mysterious “Batman,” police are reminding the public that taking the law into your own hands is still a crime, even if it makes for a pretty unforgettable superhero story.

Only question remains, who is his Robin??
