ROCK MOMENT – Foreigner “Say You Will”

By 1987, Foreigner was one of the biggest rock bands in the world, but the group was also entering a period of change. Their hit single “Say You Will” became one of the defining songs of that era, helping launch a new chapter for the band while proving they could still dominate the charts in the age of MTV.
“Say You Will” was released as the lead single from Inside Information, Foreigner’s sixth studio album. The song was written by band founder Mick Jones and vocalist Lou Gramm, the songwriting partnership responsible for many of the band’s biggest hits. Following the massive success of Agent Provocateur and the worldwide smash “I Want to Know What Love Is,” expectations were high for the band’s next release.
The song blended Foreigner’s trademark arena-rock sound with the polished production style that was popular in the late 1980s. Featuring soaring synthesizers, a driving rhythm, and Lou Gramm’s powerful vocals, “Say You Will” delivered a mix of rock energy and melodic hooks that appealed to both rock and pop audiences. The track was produced by Mick Jones and veteran producer Frank Filipetti, who helped create the album’s sleek, radio-friendly sound.
Upon its release, “Say You Will” became a major hit, reaching the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 and receiving heavy airplay on both radio and MTV. The music video, featuring the band performing amid dramatic lighting and visual effects, reflected the increasingly important role that music television played in promoting rock acts during the decade.
The success of the single helped Inside Information achieve platinum status in the United States. Although the album would be one of the final major projects featuring the classic songwriting partnership of Jones and Gramm before their relationship became strained, it demonstrated that Foreigner remained a commercial force more than a decade after their debut.
Today, “Say You Will” stands as one of the band’s signature late-career hits. While songs like “Cold as Ice,” “Hot Blooded,” and “Juke Box Hero” often receive more attention, “Say You Will” remains a favorite among fans of Foreigner’s 1980s work. Its memorable chorus, polished production, and powerful vocal performance helped cement its place in the band’s catalog and in the soundtrack of late-1980s rock radio.
