Summer road trip season is officially here, and a new study has ranked the best and worst states in America for hitting the open road.

Researchers looked at everything from gas prices and lodging costs to beaches, lakes, amusement parks, national parks, and scenic drives.

The biggest surprise? Rhode Island finished dead last. While the Ocean State has plenty of charm, being America’s smallest state doesn’t exactly help in a road trip competition. I used to live there and it is a beautiful state, but it’s so small you could drive across it without realizing it . . . turn around . . . and accidentally drive through it again.

Minnesota claimed the top spot this year, thanks in part to being one of the three safest states in the country.

The Top 10 Summer Road Trip States:

  1. Minnesota
  2. Utah
  3. Louisiana
  4. New York
  5. Florida
  6. Texas
  7. Maine
  8. Georgia
  9. North Carolina
  10. Ohio

The Bottom 10 Summer Road Trip States:

  1. Rhode Island
  2. Delaware
  3. Connecticut
  4. California
  5. Maryland
  6. Vermont
  7. Massachusetts
  8. New Mexico
  9. Montana
  10. New Hampshire

The study also revealed which states are easiest, and hardest, on your wallet when it’s time to fill up the tank.

Lowest Average Gas Prices:

  1. Oklahoma
  2. Mississippi
  3. Arkansas
  4. Louisiana
  5. Texas

Highest Average Gas Prices:

  1. Alaska
  2. Oregon
  3. Hawaii
  4. Washington
  5. California

There’s plenty to like. Texas ranked #6 overall, landed in the Top 5 for lowest gas prices, and offers everything from beaches and pine forests to deserts and hill country drives. That’s a pretty good combination when it’s time to roll down the windows, turn up the classic rock, and hit the highway.
