ROCK MOMENT – Rick Rubin
Few music producers have had a greater impact on modern music than Rick Rubin. Known for his long beard, minimalist approach, and ability to bring out the best in artists, Rubin has helped shape the sound of rock, metal, hip-hop, country, and alternative music for more than four decades.
Born in Long Beach, New York, in 1963, Rubin co-founded Def Jam Recordings while attending New York University. The label quickly became one of the most influential forces in hip-hop, launching careers for artists such as Run-D.M.C., Beastie Boys, and LL Cool J. But Rubin’s influence would soon extend far beyond rap music.
Rock fans know Rubin for revitalizing the careers of legendary artists and producing some of the most acclaimed albums of the last 40 years. In the late 1980s and early 1990s, he worked with Red Hot Chili Peppers on breakthrough albums including Blood Sugar Sex Magik. Perhaps Rubin’s most celebrated achievement was helping revive Johnny Cash’s career through the American Recordings series. By stripping songs down to their emotional core, Rubin showcased Cash’s voice and storytelling in a way that connected with a new generation of listeners. Cash famously trusted Rubin’s instincts, leading to some of the most powerful recordings of his later years.
