By 1981, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were beginning to establish themselves as one of America’s premier rock bands. Their album Hard Promises would become a major success, producing classics like ‘The Waiting’ and ‘A Woman in Love (It’s Not Me),’ a song that showcased a more vulnerable side of Tom Petty’s songwriting.

Released as the second single from Hard Promises, ‘A Woman in Love (It’s Not Me)’ arrived during a turbulent but creative period for the band. Petty was still riding the momentum of 1979’s breakthrough album Damn the Torpedoes, but he was also dealing with record-label battles and the pressures that came with sudden fame. Despite those challenges, he continued writing songs that connected deeply with listeners.

The song tells the story of a man watching the woman he loves give her heart to someone else. Unlike many heartbreak songs that focus on anger or revenge, Petty approached the subject with resignation and sadness. The narrator understands that the woman is in love—but unfortunately, not with him. That simple but painful realization gives the song its emotional power.

Musically, the track blends jangling guitars, steady rhythms, and Petty’s unmistakable vocal delivery. Heartbreakers guitarist Mike Campbell contributed the tasteful guitar work that helped define the band’s signature sound, while keyboardist Benmont Tench added subtle layers that enhanced the song’s melancholy mood.

Although it wasn’t the biggest hit from Hard Promises, the single performed well on rock radio and became a fan favorite. Over the years, many listeners have praised its relatable lyrics and understated arrangement. The song demonstrated that Petty didn’t need elaborate production or dramatic storytelling to make an impact. Sometimes a simple truth about love and loss was enough.

Today, ‘A Woman in Love (It’s Not Me) remains one of the hidden gems in the Tom Petty catalog. While songs like ‘Free Fallin” and ‘American Girl’ may receive more attention, this early-1980s classic captures the honest, everyday heartbreak that made Tom Petty one of rock’s most beloved songwriters. Its enduring appeal is a reminder that some of the most powerful songs are also the most human.
