Here are five classic rock bands that reached the top of the charts and later called it quits, at least in their most recognizable forms.

The Beatles are probably the most famous example. The legendary Liverpool quartet dominated the 1960s, earning countless No. 1 hits, including “Hey Jude” and “Let It Be.” Despite their enormous success, internal tensions, business disputes, and creative differences eventually led to the band’s breakup in 1970. Even decades later, their influence on rock music remains unmatched.

The Police became one of the biggest bands of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Led by Sting, the group scored No. 1 hits such as “Every Breath You Take.” While their blend of rock, reggae, and pop earned worldwide acclaim, conflicts among members contributed to their breakup in 1986 after a remarkably successful run.

Cream, featuring Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, and Ginger Baker, was one of rock’s first supergroups. The band achieved massive commercial success and helped define blues-rock. Although their career was brief, they reached the top of charts and sold millions of records before disbanding in 1968 due to ongoing personal and creative clashes.

Simon & Garfunkel blended folk and rock into a chart-topping formula that produced No. 1 songs like “The Sound of Silence” and “Bridge Over Troubled Water.” Despite their success, the partnership between Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel became strained, leading to their breakup in 1970. They reunited occasionally but never permanently re-formed.

The Eagles in Concert

The Eagles ruled 1970s rock with hits such as “Best of My Love” and “Hotel California.” After years of chart success, tensions within the band boiled over, culminating in a split in 1980. Although The Eagles later reunited, their original breakup became one of the most talked-about endings in rock history.

These bands proved that even reaching No. 1 doesn’t guarantee longevity. In many cases, the same ambition and creativity that fueled their success also contributed to their eventual breakup
