The Royal Navy is reportedly set to spend up to £200,000 redesigning female sailors’ uniforms after concerns were raised about “inappropriately placed” buttons.
According to an internal document seen by The Times, the No 1 jacket, worn at ceremonial events by figures including the Princess Royal, will be altered “at the Crown’s expense,” meaning the cost will be covered by taxpayers.
The current design features four rows of two buttons, with the top set positioned at chest level. Under the proposed changes, all eight buttons will be moved lower on the jacket.
A temporary Royal Navy memorandum circulated across the fleet reportedly stated: “The position of the top two ‘decorative’ buttons on the older design of the female officer’s No 1 jacket are deemed to be inappropriately placed.”
Maybe a woman should have designed these in the 1st place!
