ROCK MOMENT – Bon Jovi ‘Runaway’

Released in 1984, Runaway was the song that launched Bon Jovi from an unknown New Jersey rock act into one of the biggest bands in the world. Long before stadium tours and multi-platinum albums, ‘Runaway’ began as a demo recording created by a young singer named Jon Bon Jovi who was still trying to break into the music business.
Jon Bon Jovi was working at his cousin Tony Bongiovi’s recording studio, The Power Station, in New York City when he wrote and recorded the song. At the time, he was mainly doing odd jobs around the studio while hoping for a chance to showcase his own music. ‘Runaway’ was written with songwriter George Karak, and its lyrics told the story of a troubled young woman trying to escape loneliness and disappointment. The emotional theme connected with listeners, especially younger audiences.
The original recording of ‘Runaway’ was not actually performed by the full Bon Jovi band. Instead, Jon assembled a group of studio musicians later nicknamed “The All Star Review.” The lineup included respected session players such as keyboardist Roy Bittan from Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band. Their polished musicianship helped give the song its professional sound, particularly the famous keyboard intro and soaring guitar work.
After the song was included on a local radio station compilation album in New Jersey, it quickly became a regional hit. Strong listener response convinced record executives that Jon Bon Jovi had serious potential. Soon afterward, he officially formed Bon Jovi with guitarist Richie Sambora, keyboardist David Bryan, bassist Alec John Such, and drummer Tico Torres.
‘Runaway’ became the band’s first major hit, reaching the Billboard Top 40 and helping their self-titled debut album gain national attention. The song blended melodic hooks with arena rock energy, laying the foundation for Bon Jovi’s future success throughout the 1980s.
More than four decades later, ‘Runaway’ remains a fan favorite and an important piece of Bon Jovi history. It represents the moment when Jon Bon Jovi transformed from a struggling studio worker into the frontman of one of rock music’s most successful bands.
