Released in 1978, ‘The Load-Out/Stay’ became one of the most unique and heartfelt songs in Jackson Browne’s career. Featured on the live album Running on Empty, the song was unlike most rock singles of its era because it focused not on fame or romance, but on the exhausting reality of life on the road for touring musicians and their crews.

‘The Load-Out’ was written by Jackson Browne and Bryan Garofalo as a tribute to the roadies, stagehands, truck drivers, and sound crews who worked behind the scenes at concerts. Browne had spent years touring and witnessed firsthand how much effort went into setting up and tearing down shows night after night. The term “load-out” refers to the process of dismantling equipment after a concert ends, often in the early morning hours after fans have gone home.

The song’s lyrics paint a vivid picture of the constant travel, long nights, and camaraderie shared by touring crews. Browne wanted listeners to understand that concerts were not only about the performers onstage but also about the hardworking people who made those performances possible. At a time when few artists publicly recognized road crews in songs, ‘The Load-Out’ stood out as a sincere gesture of appreciation.

As the song progresses, it transitions seamlessly into ‘Stay’, the classic doo-wop hit originally recorded by Maurice Williams & the Zodiacs in 1960. Browne’s version transformed ‘Stay’ into a warm and emotional farewell to concert audiences. The extended ending featured strong harmonies from Browne and his band, creating the feeling of one final encore before the crowd headed home.

The combination of ‘The Load-Out’ and ‘Stay’ became a fan favorite and a staple of classic rock radio. Even though the medley was never released as a major commercial single in the United States, it became one of Browne’s best-known recordings and remains deeply associated with the spirit of touring musicians.

Decades later, ‘The Load-Out/Stay’ continues to resonate with music fans because of its honesty and gratitude. It remains one of the few popular rock songs to celebrate the unseen workers behind live music while also capturing the bittersweet feeling of the end of a concert night.
