Released in 1980, ‘Treat Me Right’ became one of the defining early hits for Pat Benatar and helped solidify her place as a powerful voice in rock music at the dawn of the MTV era. The song appeared on her second studio album, Crimes of Passion, which proved to be her commercial breakthrough and a cornerstone of her career.

‘Treat Me Right’ was written by songwriter Doug Lubahn, rather than Benatar herself, but she made it unmistakably her own through her commanding vocal performance. The track blends elements of hard rock and pop, showcasing a confident, assertive tone that became a hallmark of Benatar’s early work. Lyrically, the song focuses on themes of self-respect and standing up for oneself in a relationship, reflecting a growing cultural emphasis on independence and empowerment—especially for women—in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

The recording of Crimes of Passion marked a turning point for Benatar and her band, particularly guitarist Neil Giraldo, whose tight, energetic playing helped define the album’s sound. His musical partnership with Benatar would become one of the most important collaborations in her career, contributing to a string of hits throughout the decade.

‘Treat Me Right’ performed well on the charts, reaching the Top 20 on the Billboard Hot 100 and gaining heavy rotation on rock radio. It followed the success of her breakthrough single ‘Heartbreaker,’ further establishing her as a rising star in a male-dominated genre. Around this time, Benatar also began to benefit from the rise of music television, particularly MTV, which would launch the following year and frequently feature her videos.

Over time, ‘Treat Me Right’ has remained a staple of Benatar’s live performances and a fan favorite. Its message of confidence and emotional strength continues to resonate, while its driving rhythm and memorable chorus capture the raw energy that made Pat Benatar one of rock’s most influential female artists.
