  • Joel has released numerous acclaimed albums, selling over 150 million records globally.
  • Despite personal ups and downs, he continues to captivate audiences with his versatile sound and iconic songs.
  • Even in his later years, Joel remains an active performer, packing stadiums and refusing to retire.

Alright, sit down and pay attention, because we’re talking about Billy Joel, the Piano Man himself and believe me, this guy’s got more hits than your average boxer and more stories than your loudest uncle.

Born May 9, 1949, in The Bronx and raised out in Long Island, Joel turns another year older and still somehow manages to outlast half the music industry. You got artists coming and going like bad dinner guests, this guy sticks around like the bill.

Now let’s talk music. This isn’t some lightweight act. We’re talking albums like Cold Spring Harbor, Piano Man, Streetlife Serenade, Turnstiles, The Stranger, 52nd Street, Glass Houses, The Nylon Curtain, An Innocent Man, The Bridge, Storm Front and River of Dreams. That’s a lineup, pal. And globally? Over 150 million records sold. Not bad for a guy sitting at a piano telling you about heartbreak, bars and bad decisions which, frankly, he knows a little about.

His sound? A little rock, a little pop, a little jazz like a musical buffet where everything actually tastes good. “Piano Man” became an anthem, “Uptown Girl” had everybody snapping their fingers and “We Didn’t Start the Fire” made history class sound like a nightclub act. The guy didn’t just write songs, he wrote chapters of people’s lives.

Through the years

Now, marriages, oh boy, here we go. Joel’s been married four times. First to Elizabeth Weber, who also managed his career, nothing says romance like arguing over royalties. Then came supermodel Christie Brinkley, that marriage gave us a fairytale and then, like all fairytales, an ending. Third was Katie Lee, a chef finally, someone who could feed him between shows. And now he’s married to Alexis Roderick, and let’s hope for his sake she’s the final encore, because even he can’t keep doing reunion tours in his personal life.

Health? He’s had his bumps. Back issues, hip surgery and you spend decades hunched over a piano bench, what do you expect, a spa day? But he’s kept going, showing up, playing hard, proving he’s tougher than he looks.

And touring, here’s the kicker. While most guys his age are arguing with the TV remote, Joel’s been packing Madison Square Garden with his long-running residency, one of the most successful concert runs in history. Month after month, sellout after sellout. He finally wrapped that historic residency in 2024, but he still pops up for select stadium shows, because apparently, retirement bores him.

So what do you get with Billy Joel? Talent, longevity, a little chaos, a lot of music and a career that refuses to quit. The guy’s a legend, whether you like it or not. And if you don’t like it? That’s your problem, go listen to something else, but don’t come crying when it’s not this good.
