Rain, Rage, and Rock – Pink Floyd – Houston April 30, 1977
On April 30, 1977, Pink Floyd brought their massive Animals tour to Houston, performing at Jeppesen Stadium on the campus of the University of Houston. The venue was later renamed Robertson Stadium before being demolished in 2012.
It was not just another stop on the tour. It became one of the most talked-about concerts in Houston rock history.

At the time, Pink Floyd was at its peak, delivering a dark, theatrical set built around Animals, along with staples like “Wish You Were Here” and “Shine On You Crazy Diamond.” The production was massive for the era, featuring towering speaker stacks, an elaborate light show, and a giant inflatable pig designed to float above the crowd.
Weather quickly became a factor. Stormy conditions grounded the pig and added tension to the night. Reports from attendees describe a restless crowd, with bottles and fireworks appearing late in the show. That energy, combined with the band’s already brooding performance, created an atmosphere that felt both electric and uneasy.
Reviews and retrospectives often describe the show as powerful but volatile. Musically, the band delivered at a high level, but the crowd dynamic told another story. That growing disconnect between performer and audience would soon become a defining theme for the band.
In hindsight, that night in Houston stands as a snapshot of rock at a turning point.
