Zebra Striping

‘Zebra striping’ is a simple drinking strategy that involves alternating alcoholic beverages with water, one drink, then one glass of water, repeated throughout the night. The goal is to slow alcohol consumption, stay hydrated, and reduce some of the less pleasant side effects of drinking, like headaches, nausea, and “hangxiety.”
By spacing out your drinks with water, you’re less likely to become overly intoxicated too quickly. Alcohol is dehydrating, which is a major contributor to hangovers, so regularly drinking water can help your body maintain a better fluid balance. While it won’t completely prevent a hangover, it can make the next day more manageable.
Health experts often recommend this approach, especially in warmer weather when dehydration can happen faster. It’s also a practical way to pace yourself during long social events, allowing you to stay present and enjoy the experience without overdoing it.
There’s another, less obvious benefit: taste. Alternating with water can actually improve how your drinks taste over time. Strong or sugary flavors can overwhelm your palate, making each sip less enjoyable as the night goes on. Drinking water in between helps reset your taste buds, so you can better appreciate each drink.
The method also aligns with a broader trend of people, particularly younger generations, drinking less overall. Zebra striping offers a way to participate socially without consuming as much alcohol, striking a balance between enjoyment and moderation. It’s an easy, low-effort habit that can make a noticeable difference in how you feel both during and after a night out.
Cheers!
