Cleaning service

The “just one song” rule is a fun, low-pressure way to get things done: pick a song, start cleaning or decluttering when it begins, and stop the moment it ends. No guilt, no overthinking, no “I have to finish everything.”

According to professional organizer Regina Lark, the magic is in the structure. Big, undefined tasks (like organizing a closet or tackling paperwork) can feel overwhelming, which makes it easy to avoid them altogether. But a song has a clear beginning, middle, and end, suddenly, your task feels manageable because it’s contained in a tiny window of time.

Even better, your brain actually likes this approach. It’s much more willing to commit to a short burst of effort than an open-ended chore. Add music into the mix, and you get a little dopamine boost, which helps with motivation and momentum. In other words, you’re tricking your brain, in the best way.

The fun part? It becomes a mini challenge. How much can you get done in three to five minutes? You might clear off a messy counter, fold a pile of laundry, or finally deal with that random stack of papers. And if you feel like stopping when the song ends, you kept your promise. If you want to keep going, that’s just a bonus!

You can also use this trick beyond cleaning. Try answering emails for one song, organizing your bag, or tidying up before bed to your favorite track. It’s flexible, easy, and surprisingly motivating.

Turns out, sometimes all it takes to get started… is pressing play!
