A new St. Patrick’s Day report ranked every state based on overall “luck,” using three categories:

  • Pure luck: lottery wins, lightning strikes, and Irish population percentage
  • Financial luck: cost of living and affordability
  • Lifestyle and safety luck: natural disasters, car accidents, workplace risk, and divorce rates.

According to the report, the luckiest states are:

  • New Hampshire (#1)
  • Iowa (#2)
  • Minnesota (#3)
  • Pennsylvania (#4)
  • Massachusetts (#5)
  • Illinois (#6)
  • Indiana (#7)
  • Rhode Island (#8)
  • Michigan (#9)
  • Connecticut (#10)

These states are mostly in colder regions and scored well due to strong credit scores, affordable housing, and moderate safety risks.

The unluckiest states are:

  • Texas (#50)
  • California (#49)
  • Mississippi (#48)
  • Florida (#47)
  • Alabama (#46)
  • Nevada (#45)
  • New Mexico (#44)
  • Arkansas (#43)
  • Oklahoma (#42)
  • Tennessee (#41)

These states are largely in warmer regions and ranked lower due to higher accident rates, more frequent natural disasters, and higher divorce rates.

Overall, the data shows that colder states currently still in winter conditions ranked higher in “luck,” while warmer states moving into spring ranked lower.

We may not be the “luckiest” state, but we are lucky to be IN this state!
