Released in 1994, ‘Always’ became one of the most successful power ballads by Bon Jovi and one of the band’s biggest global hits. The song appeared on their greatest hits compilation, Cross Road, which introduced several new tracks alongside the band’s classic singles and helped reignite their popularity during the mid-1990s.

Interestingly, the song almost never saw the light of day. Lead singer Jon Bon Jovi originally wrote ‘Always’ for the soundtrack to the 1993 film Romeo Is Bleeding. After seeing an early cut of the movie, however, Jon felt the film was not very good and decided he didn’t want the song associated with it. As a result, he pulled the track from the soundtrack before it could be used.

For a time, the demo sat unused. That changed when Jon played the song for producer and songwriter Desmond Child, who had collaborated with the band on several of their biggest hits. Child immediately recognized the song’s potential and encouraged Bon Jovi to finish it properly. The band returned to the studio and completed the track with a full arrangement, transforming it into the soaring power ballad fans know today.

Musically, ‘Always’ blends emotional piano lines with dramatic guitar work from Richie Sambora. The song gradually builds from a quiet, heartfelt opening into a powerful chorus filled with layered guitars and intense vocals. Lyrically, it tells the story of regret and heartbreak, with the narrator expressing deep remorse for losing someone he loves and promising he would do anything to make things right.

When released as a single in late 1994, the song became a massive international success. It reached No. 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 and topped charts in several countries. The dramatic music video—featuring a love triangle and emotional turmoil—received heavy rotation on MTV and helped drive the song’s popularity.

Over time, ‘Always’ has become one of Bon Jovi’s signature ballads and a staple of their live performances. Its combination of heartfelt lyrics, powerful vocals, and arena-rock instrumentation helped cement the band’s reputation for crafting emotional anthems that resonated with millions of fans around the world.
