Released in 1987, ‘When Love Walks In’ became one of the most melodic and emotional songs recorded by Van Halen during the band’s era with vocalist Sammy Hagar. The track appeared on the band’s album OU812, which followed the enormous success of their previous record, 5150. By this point, Van Halen had fully embraced a more polished, keyboard-driven sound that helped expand their audience far beyond hard rock fans.

The song began with keyboardist and guitarist Eddie Van Halen experimenting with a simple yet powerful keyboard progression. During the mid-1980s, Eddie had increasingly incorporated synthesizers into the band’s music, a direction that had already produced massive hits like ‘Jump.’ For ‘When Love Walks In,’ Eddie crafted a bright, uplifting melody built around shimmering synthesizer chords that created a sense of anticipation and emotional warmth.

Sammy Hagar was inspired by the music almost immediately. According to Hagar, the song’s lyrics came together quickly as he reflected on the moment when someone unexpectedly falls in love and how life suddenly feels different. Instead of focusing on heartbreak or longing, the song celebrates the transformative feeling of love entering someone’s life. The lyrics capture that realization that once love appears, everything—from the way the world looks to the way a person thinks—can change.

Musically, the band blended Eddie’s sweeping keyboard parts with a steady rhythm section from bassist Michael Anthony and drummer Alex Van Halen. Eddie also layered tasteful guitar work into the arrangement, giving the song a balance between arena rock power and pop accessibility.

‘When Love Walks In’ was released as a single in 1988 and became a major radio hit. It climbed to No. 5 on the Billboard Hot 100, making it one of the band’s biggest hits of the Hagar era. The song’s romantic theme and soaring chorus helped it become a staple of late-1980s rock radio.

Today, ‘When Love Walks In’ remains one of Van Halen’s most beloved power ballads. It represents the band’s ability to combine technical musicianship with emotional songwriting, highlighting a softer, more melodic side of a group best known for its explosive rock sound.
