ROCK MOMENT – REO Speedwagon ‘I Do’ Wanna Know’

Released in 1980 on the massively successful album Hi Infidelity, ‘I Do’ Wanna Know’ by REO Speedwagon represents a fascinating moment in the band’s evolution from hard-touring Midwest rockers into one of the biggest arena acts of the early 1980s. While the album is best known for massive hits like ‘Keep On Loving You’ and ‘Take It on the Run,’ ‘I Do’ Wanna Know’ captures a slightly different side of the group—one rooted in their earlier, guitar-driven rock sound.
The song was written by lead vocalist and guitarist Kevin Cronin, who had rejoined REO Speedwagon in the late 1970s after a brief departure from the band. Cronin’s return helped stabilize the lineup and usher in a more focused songwriting period that ultimately led to Hi Infidelity. During the writing sessions for the album, Cronin and the band were determined to balance emotional ballads with energetic rock tracks that would still connect with their longtime fans.
‘I Do’ Wanna Know’ grew out of that approach. Musically, the track leans heavily on punchy guitar riffs, driving drums, and layered harmonies that reflect the band’s live performance energy. Lyrically, the song explores themes of relationship uncertainty and emotional tension—an area Cronin frequently drew from in his songwriting. The narrator struggles with mixed feelings about love and honesty, torn between wanting the truth and fearing what it might reveal.
During the recording sessions for Hi Infidelity at Crystal Studios in Los Angeles, producer Kevin Beamish helped the band refine their sound with cleaner production and tighter arrangements. Even on the heavier tracks like ‘I Do’ Wanna Know,’ the production allowed each instrument to shine while maintaining the polished radio-ready style that would define the album.
