Dump truck

Things got a little holey in Phillipsburg this week. A surprise sinkhole opened up, gulping down a dump truck that was ironically on its way to fix… a sinkhole.

Just a few feet away, a car took a dive into a second hole, though rescuers managed to haul it back out. The truck, however, wasn’t as lucky, it crashed into a water main, leaving some residents without water and giving the phrase “hole in the system” a literal twist.

By Tuesday, officials declared a state of local emergency, and nearby residents were evacuated as a safety precaution with help from the American Red Cross. Police warned that the sinkhole was bigger than expected, definitely not a small pothole situation.

Phillipsburg residents can now officially say they’ve had a “groundbreaking” week… whether they meant it or not.
