Joan Jett’s ‘I Love Rock ’n’ Roll’ is one of the most enduring anthems in the history of popular music, a song that helped define the sound and attitude of early 1980s rock. Although many fans associate it exclusively with Jett, the song’s roots trace back to 1975, when it was written and first recorded by the British band The Arrows. Joan Jett discovered the track while touring England with her pioneering all-female group, The Runaways. Captivated by its raw simplicity and rebellious spirit, she tucked the song away in her memory, knowing it had the potential to become something bigger.

After The Runaways disbanded in 1979, Jett faced an uncertain future. Record labels initially rejected her solo material, and she briefly stepped away from performing. Undeterred, she teamed up with producer and songwriter Kenny Laguna and formed the Blackhearts. Together, they set out to craft a hard-edged, no-nonsense rock sound that would cut through the pop-dominated airwaves of the time. In 1981, Jett and the Blackhearts recorded their own version of ‘I Love Rock ’n’ Roll,’ infusing it with a heavier guitar crunch, a stomping beat, and Jett’s unmistakably tough, sneering vocal delivery.

Released in early 1982, the song quickly caught fire, propelled by constant rotation on the then-new MTV. The iconic video, featuring Jett in black leather commanding a sweaty club crowd, reinforced her image as a fearless rock frontwoman and helped bring guitar-driven music back into the mainstream. ‘I Love Rock ’n’ Roll’ soared to No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 and remained there for seven weeks, becoming one of the defining hits of the decade.

Beyond its chart success, the song became a statement of identity. Its simple, chant-like chorus celebrated the communal, liberating power of rock music and solidified Joan Jett’s role as a trailblazer for women in a male-dominated genre. Decades later, ‘I Love Rock ’n’ Roll’ remains a timeless anthem, instantly recognizable and forever linked to Joan Jett’s rebellious spirit and lasting impact on rock history.
