Heading for the hills might actually be your best move if zombies start roaming the Earth. A new study from CanadaCasino ranked all 50 U.S. states on their zombie apocalypse readiness, and while it sounds like movie madness, the results make eerie sense.

Researchers looked at six survival factors: population density, water access, hospitals, airports, hunting and fishing stores, and military bases. Then they scored each state out of 10 for apocalypse preparedness.

Here are the 10 worst states to be in when the undead rise:

  1. New Jersey (1.66)
  2. Connecticut (2.15)
  3. Pennsylvania & Massachusetts (2.57)
  4. California (2.6)
  5. New York (2.61)
  6. Illinois (2.68)
  7. Arizona (2.71)
  8. Tennessee (2.73)
  9. Indiana (2.78)
  10. Ohio (2.81)

And the 10 best states to survive the zombie apocalypse:

  1. Alaska (7.89)
  2. Maine (5.31)
  3. South Dakota (5.17)
  4. Montana (4.93)
  5. North Dakota (4.79)
  6. Wyoming (4.67)
  7. Hawaii (4.43)
  8. Michigan (4.12)
  9. Mississippi (4.10)
  10. Oklahoma & Louisiana (4.08)

Texas landed just outside the top 10, ranked 12th overall, earning praise for its mix of military bases, open space, and plenty of hunters who already know their way around survival gear.

So if the undead start knocking, the Lone Star State isn’t a bad place to hole up, just keep your boots dusty, your aim steady, and don’t open the door if you hear a strange noise!
