You might assume Florida would top the list of the most haunted states, but it turns out, some of those “apparitions” are just very old retirees who aren’t quite gone yet.

A new report from Casino.ca analyzed ghost sightings across North America, ranking states by the number of reports per 10,000 people. And get this, Texas came in #2 overall, right behind New York.

Here’s the list of the Top 10 Most Haunted States:

  1. New York – 81 ghost sightings per 10,000 people
  2. Texas
  3. Louisiana
  4. California
  5. Utah
  6. Florida
  7. Pennsylvania
  8. Alabama
  9. Nevada
  10. Washington

If you’ve ever wandered through Houston’s Jefferson Davis Hospital (now the Elder Street Artist Lofts), heard whispers from the Rice Hotel, or spent a night at Galveston’s Hotel Galvez, none of this is shocking. The Lone Star State has spirits with stories to tell, especially around the Alamo, where sightings of soldiers and settlers are part of Texas legend.

And while Georgia came in as the least haunted (just six sightings per 10,000 people), that just means the ghosts are behaving over there.

In Texas, though? They make themselves known, flickering lights, phantom footsteps, and maybe a friendly “boo” for good measure. Because in Houston and beyond, even our hauntings come Texas-sized.
