ROCK MOMENT – Loverboy ‘Lovin’ Every Minute of It’

‘Lovin’ Every Minute of It’ became one of Loverboy’s biggest hits, but the story behind the song and its MTV-fueled success is full of twists, luck, and a few weird coincidences.
By 1985, the Canadian rockers were looking for one last great song to complete their fourth album. They had the energy and the hits—Working for the Weekend, Hot Girls in Love—but nothing that felt fresh enough to compete in the increasingly visual MTV era. That’s when producer Tom Allom reached out to legendary hitmaker Mutt Lange, who was deep in the middle of producing Def Leppard. Too busy to meet in person, Lange sent Loverboy a demo tape through the mail—a fully written song called ‘Lovin’ Every Minute of It.‘
The band instantly knew they had something special. Lead singer Mike Reno later joked that Lange “delivered us a hit like a takeout order.” Still, the recording was no cakewalk. Lange’s demo was so intricate that Loverboy had to carefully replicate his vocal phrasing and huge harmonies. Even the title, according to legend, came from a phrase Lange overheard in a London pub and scribbled onto a napkin.
When the track was released, MTV was in full swing—and the video, packed with neon lights, high-energy concert footage, and quick cuts, fit right in with the network’s flashy mid-’80s aesthetic. It became a heavy MTV rotation favorite, giving Loverboy a massive boost in visibility and turning the song into their first U.S. Top 10 hit.
The combination of a mailed-in song from one of rock’s biggest producers and the unstoppable power of MTV turned ‘Lovin’ Every Minute of It’ into a defining moment for Loverboy—a track born out of chance, perfected in the studio, and immortalized on the small screen.
