Went from Mansions to Mayhem
9 Rock Stars Who Went from Mansions to Mayhem Bankrupt, Busted, and Broke!
They had it all the money, the mansions, the private jets and groupies by the dozen. Somewhere between the platinum records and the all-night parties, these rock gods managed to blow fortunes that would make Wall Street weep. Here’s a roll call of 9 rock legends who hit the high life and then hit rock bottom.
1. MC Hammer – “Too Legit” to Budget
Sure, he’s more hip-hop than hard rock, but Hammer partied like a rock star with a reported $70 million fortune and blew it all on an entourage of 200 people, gold-plated gates and exotic animals. Filed for bankruptcy in 1996. Can’t touch this? Apparently, the IRS could.

2. Ted Nugent – Tax Troubles and Legal Wrangles
The Motor City Madman has had ups and downs, including tax liens and lawsuits that drained his bank account in the ’80s. He’s bounced back, but for a while, things were far from “Cat Scratch Fever.”
3. Billy Joel – Robbed by His Own Brother-in-Law
The Piano Man found out the hard way that family and business don’t mix. His former manager (and brother-in-law) allegedly drained his accounts, leaving Joel out over $30 million. He sued, but the damage was done.

4. Tom Petty – Declared Bankruptcy to Escape a Bad Record Deal
In the ’70s, Petty used bankruptcy as a power move. It wasn’t that he was broke it was his way of escaping a ruthless record contract. Smart? Yes. Risky? Absolutely.

5. Vince Neil (Mötley Crüe) – Booze, Boats & Bad Business
Vince made millions as Crüe’s frontman but lost a chunk in failed business ventures and lawsuits. A tequila brand, strip clubs, and car crashes? Yeah, not exactly a sound investment strategy.
6. Meat Loaf – Bankrupt Despite “Bat Out of Hell” Millions
Meat Loaf filed for bankruptcy in the ‘80s after lawsuits from former collaborators and mounting debt. He eventually clawed his way back, but for years he was living on the edge.

7. Dee Snider (Twisted Sister) – No More Fortune
Despite huge hits, Snider ended up broke in the ’90s. “I didn’t write the songs, I didn’t get the royalties,” he later said. Welcome to the not-so-glamorous side of glam metal.
8. Courtney Love – Squandered Kurt’s Millions
Love inherited Nirvana royalties and blew through tens of millions. Real estate lawsuits, drugs and chaos followed. Hole, indeed.

9. David Crosby – From Byrds to Broke
Addiction, legal battles and liver transplants put Crosby in the red more than once. He admitted to selling his guitars just to get by.
Lesson learned? You can rock a stadium, but you can’t out-jam bad decisions. Fame fades, but debt that sticks around like glitter on a tour bus.
