Fall Home Safety Checklist
We’re officially a week into fall, and while you might already be sipping pumpkin spice, now’s a good time to make sure your home is ready for the season. Experts say there are a few safety checks you’ll want to knock out sooner rather than later:
- Chimneys and heating systems. Before you flip on the furnace, have it inspected for gas leaks or other issues. If you’ve got a fireplace, clear out nests or blockages in the chimney to avoid a dangerous fire.
- Smoke and carbon monoxide detectors. Test them now and replace the batteries, or the whole unit if needed. These are especially important once heaters are running.
- Roofs and gutters. Scan your roof for missing shingles or sagging areas that could lead to leaks. And clear your gutters so they don’t overflow or freeze up once the weather turns.
- Outdoor walkways and lighting. Cracked or uneven paths can be hidden by leaves or snow, making them a tripping hazard. Also, check that all outdoor lights are working.
- Emergency supplies and backup power. Depending on where you live, a power outage could mean trouble. Keep flashlights, batteries, blankets, bottled water, and nonperishable food handy.
It doesn’t take long to run through this list, and it could make your home much safer and more comfortable as the temperatures drop. So before fall fully settles in, maybe trade one weekend of raking leaves for a quick round of safety prep, you’ll thank yourself later.
