On September 24, 1980, John Bonham lived his final day much like he had lived his career, caught between thunderous brilliance and quiet struggle. Known to fans simply as “Bonzo,” he wasn’t just the drummer for Led Zeppelin. He was the heartbeat of the band, a force of nature behind the kit. His power, speed, and feel made Led Zeppelin’s music quake with life.

Bonham started the morning at rehearsal, showing flashes of his old brilliance behind the kit. Those who were there recalled that even as the band worked through songs, he was pushing the tempo, pounding the skins with his signature fury. Off the kit, though, he wasn’t himself. Friends remembered he was tired, struggling with the weight of years on the road, fame, and heavy drinking.

That evening, Bonham reportedly consumed large amounts of vodka, a habit that had become increasingly dangerous. He retired to bed at Page’s house, never to wake again. In the early hours of September 25th, the rock world lost one of its giants.

45 years later he raw talent has never been matched. Rolling Stone ranked John Bonham the #1 greatest drummer of all time, Modern Drummer listed him #1 among the “50 Greatest Rock Drummers,” and Classic Rock readers also placed him at the very top.

The beat he laid down has never been matched.
