HOUSTON — Houston ISD is addressing the concerns of many parents with K-12 students in the district by adding nearly 400 bus stops, according to ABC13. In a Sept. 11 meeting, the HISD board of managers approved the addition of 374 bus stops to daily routes.

Currently, HISD’s transportation policy outlines that K-12 students who live two or more miles away from their school can ride the school bus. K-12 students who live within a two-mile radius of their school have had to walk or find alternate modes of transportation to school, at times putting them in dangerous situations based on what lies between them and their school lockers. These new bus stops aim to change traversing hazardous traffic conditions for many students.

Texas law has this to say about hazardous traffic conditions for students: “A hazardous traffic condition exists where no walkway is provided and children must walk along or cross a freeway or expressway, an underpass, an overpass or a bridge, an uncontrolled major traffic artery, an industrial or commercial area, or another comparable condition. An area presents a high risk of violence if law enforcement records indicate a high incidence of violent crimes in the area.”

At the present moment, there’s no data on how many students will benefit from the added 374 bus stops, or how or if HISD plans to hire additional bus drivers to make these changes possible.

According to the approved 2025-26 school year budget, $38,336,368 has been set aside for transportation, which is reportedly nearly $5.5 million more than what 2024-25’s budget was given. HISD adding these additional bus stops will reportedly open up the district to additional state funding.
