In August of 2024, the legendary rock band Aerosmith retired from the road, canceling their “Peace Out” tour that had previously been delayed for nearly a year due to frontman Steven Tyler’s vocal injury. Now, another year later, signs are starting to point toward the possibility of the “Bad Boys from Boston” getting “back in the saddle again.”
The Breakdown
2025 has been an eventful year for the members of Aerosmith, most notably Tyler and lead guitarist Joe Perry.
Tyler was joined by Aerosmith bassist Tom Hamilton in February for his sixth annual Jam for Janie Grammy Awards viewing party at the Hollywood Palladium for a six-song set.
Perry and Tyler first reunited in May at a benefit concert for Tyler’s nonprofit organization to help vulnerable women, Janie’s Fund, in San Francisco. The duo performed a short set of five songs, and despite the injury to his vocal cords causing the band’s early retirement, Tyler reportedly sounded pretty good.
In July Tyler made the trip to Birmingham, England, for Ozzy Osbourne’s and Black Sabbath’s farewell benefit concert, “Back to the Beginning.” He performed Walk This Way and a cover of Led Zeppelin’s Whole Lotta Love with a backing band comprised of Rage Against the Machine’s Tom Morello, guitarist Andrew Watt and Chad Smith of the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Travis Barker of Blink-182 on the drums.
In August, the Joe Perry Project, comprising of Perry, fellow Aerosmith guitarist Brad Whitford, Aerosmith acoustic guitarist Buck Johnson, former Smash Moth drummer Jason Sutter, the Black Crowes’ singer Chris Robinson and Stone Temple Pilots bassist Robert DeLeo. The band has been opening for The Who on the North American leg of their “Farewell Tour.”
Perry and Tyler once again reunited onstage in early September at the 2025 MTV VMAs to perform Mama I’m Coming Home, a tribute to the late Osbourne. Perry and Tyler were accompanied by singer Yungblud and guitarist Nuno Bettencourt of Extreme.
The VMAs performance with Yungblud has been spun into a major development for Aerosmith: A new EP, their first new music release since 2012’s Music From Another Dimension!. Aerosmith and Yungblud released a brand new song, My Only Angel, on Friday. The five-track EP, One More Time, is set follow, along with a remix of Back in the Saddle by producer Matt Schwarz, according to Guitar World.
“A year ago, I got a call that Yungblud wanted to come to Sarasota to work with me and write some songs and said, ‘Hell yeah, this guy’s got the juice,'” Perry said in an interview. “[After] four days in the studio, I called [Tyler] and told him, ‘You have to hear this guy Yungblud, he’s the real deal.’ Fast forward to May, and we’re in the studio with [Tyler] recording new music. The result turned out to be an amazing collaboration between Aerosmith and Yungblud. Let the music do the talking.”
On Wednesday at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles, Tyler joined Perry’s The Joe Perry Project onstage to perform Walk This Way and a cover the Yardbird’s Train Kept A Rollin’.
For a singer who retired because “it is clear, that a full recovery from his vocal injury is not possible,” he is sure doing a lot of work as a singer. While it’s unlikely that Tyler could carry the band through a full tour at this point in his career, it could be within the realm of possibility that we see Hamilton, Perry, Tyler. Whitford and drummer Joey Kramer take the stage at least one more time as Aerosmith.
Aerosmith fans have surely been starved for a proper farewell for the band, something one of the greatest bands in rock and roll history truly deserves.
