When it comes to happiness, not every state is all sunshine and smiles. WalletHub just released its annual study ranking all 50 states in 2025, and they didn’t just pull these numbers out of thin air. The research team compared 30 different metrics, things like emotional and physical health, career satisfaction, unemployment, life expectancy, depression rates, sleep quality, and yes, even the weather…Ok, so we’re going to take a hit for sure!

So, who’s living their best life? According to the survey, these are the Top 10 Happiest States in America:

  1. Hawaii
  2. Maryland
  3. Nebraska
  4. New Jersey
  5. Connecticut
  6. Utah
  7. California
  8. New Hampshire
  9. Massachusetts
  10. Idaho

And on the flip side, here are the 10 Least Happy States:

  1. West Virginia
  2. Louisiana
  3. Arkansas
  4. Alabama
  5. Alaska
  6. Tennessee
  7. New Mexico
  8. Kentucky
  9. Mississippi
  10. Colorado

South Carolina ends up as the very definition of “meh,” sitting right in the middle at number 25. Not too happy, not too sad, just average.

As for Texas? We landed in the lower half. While we have plenty of pride and swagger, the study found that the state finished dead last in “community and environment,” which pulled down its overall rank. That means Texas scored poorly on things like volunteerism, safety, and local engagement, even though people there still rank fairly well in career satisfaction and sunshine.

So if you’re feeling extra cheerful, odds are you’re in Hawaii. And if you’re feeling grumpy, statistically speaking, West Virginia might be to blame.

As for Texans, we can’t do anything about how big we are or how hot it is.  I guess we should just keep grillin’ and smilin’!

We know we are awesome!
