Whole Lotta Love? Depends On Which State You Live In.
When it comes to love, some states are Googling for help far more than others. Researchers tracked monthly searches for “couples therapy,” “divorce lawyers,” and “how to save your marriage” to find where relationships are thriving, and where they’re falling apart.
Worst States for Couples
- Colorado – 12,000 monthly searches, or 204 per 100,000 residents. Relationships are as rocky as the mountains.
- New Jersey – 17,756 monthly searches, or 191 per 100,000. The Garden State isn’t blooming with romance.
- New York – 36,883 monthly searches, or 188 per 100,000. A fast-paced lifestyle leaves little room for love.
- Utah – Fourth on the list of relationship woes.
- Massachusetts – Rounding out the top five most strained couples.
Relationship expert Susan Winter noted that urban areas like New York and New Jersey attract career-driven individuals, where “heightened expectations” often collide with stress, long hours, and the imperfections of daily life. That pressure leads many couples to Google outside help. In fact, “divorce lawyer near me” was the most-searched phrase in New Jersey and five other states, while “couples therapy” topped searches in New York and 38 others.
Happiest States for Couples
- South Dakota – Just 689 monthly searches, or 75 per 100,000 residents.
- Mississippi – Ranking second in relationship contentment.
- Arkansas – Third most satisfied couples.
- Louisiana – Strong show of Southern love.
- Alaska – Cold climate, but warm relationships.
Still, expert Dr. Wendy Walsh cautions: fewer searches don’t always equal happier marriages, sometimes it just means fewer resources for therapy or divorce.
In case you are wondering, Texas finished close to the middle. So, I guess we aren’t happy or unhappy with our relationships. Either way, careful what you Google!
