For nearly four and a half decades, Picos has been more than just a Mexican restaurant in Houston; it’s been a family, a flavor pioneer, and a celebration staple. Chef‑owner Arnaldo Richards, a University of Houston alum, opened the first Picos in 1984 on Bellaire Boulevard. He introduced Houstonians to regional Mexican dishes like moles, seafood, and unique flavors at a time when Tex-Mex dominated the city’s palate.

In 2014, Picos moved to its now-iconic Upper Kirby home, complete with a striking Mexican-inspired interior, a dedicated bar, and loyal “spirit locker” customers. The restaurant became famous for its shaker margaritas, juiced lime cocktails presented in bright plastic shakers, poured tableside and shaken with flair. Picos also hosted unforgettable Cinco de Mayo parties, tamale trailers, and epic Sunday brunches for generations of Houstonians.

But after 44 years of service, Richards announced that Picos will close by the end of September. The decision stems from a combination of declining sales, rising costs, changing dining habits, unresolved insurance claims from Hurricane Beryl, and personal losses, including the death of his brother and a key long-time collaborator.

Richards expressed deep gratitude to the restaurant’s staff, many of whom worked there for years, and promised farewell dinners in the coming weeks. Though Picos will soon serve its last meal in September, Richards will continue his culinary journey through FajitasDelivery.com
