‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ is one of AC/DC’s most iconic and enduring songs, symbolizing the band’s triumphant return after tragedy and their transition into global rock superstardom. Released in 1980 as the first single from the Back in Black album, the track marked the debut of lead singer Brian Johnson, who had just replaced Bon Scott following his sudden death in February of that year.

After Bon Scott’s passing, many believed the band might disband, but with encouragement from Scott’s family and fans, AC/DC chose to carry on. They recruited Johnson, formerly of the band Geordie, whose powerful vocals would help usher in a new era for the group.

‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ was written by Johnson along with Angus and Malcolm Young. With its catchy guitar riff, pounding rhythm, and cheeky, suggestive lyrics, the song became an instant hit. It blended bluesy rock with radio-friendly hooks, capturing both the raw energy of AC/DC and their refined songwriting under producer Robert John “Mutt” Lange. The lyrics painted a vivid picture of a wild romantic encounter, showcasing Johnson’s humor and flair for double entendres.

Though not initially a major chart-topper in the U.S., the song grew in popularity over time and has since become a classic rock radio staple. Its music video, featuring Johnson and the band performing in a somewhat comedic setting, received heavy rotation on MTV in its early days, further cementing its place in pop culture.

Today, ‘You Shook Me All Night Long’ stands as a symbol of resilience, reinvention, and rock ‘n’ roll at its most electrifying. It remains a crowd favorite at AC/DC concerts and continues to introduce new generations to the band’s legendary sound.
