Formed in Jacksonville, FL, in 1974 by singer-guitarists Donnie Van Zant and Don Barnes, 38 Special initially embraced a classic Southern rock sound. However, over time, their music evolved, incorporating elements of arena rock and achieving mainstream success in the 1980s with hits like Hold On Loosely, Caught Up in You and Second Chance

The band’s early years benefited from their association with Lynyrd Skynyrd‘s management, opening doors for tours and exposure. Their major breakthrough came with the 1981 album Wild-Eyed Southern Boys, which featured the enduring hit Hold On Loosely. Collaborations with artists like Jim Peterik of Survivor helped shape their signature melodic rock style.
