From the Vault: Bruce Springsteen to Release 83 ‘Lost’ Songs

Fans of The Boss having something major to look forward to this summer, as Bruce Springsteen and Sony Music will open the vault on June 27 and release 83 “lost” songs. The project is called Tracks II: The Lost Albums, a follow-up to 1998’s Tracks.

Tracks is a four-disc box set full of 66 songs of never-before released songs, single B-sides and demos of previously-released songs. Springsteen fans loved the set enough for it to achieve certified platinum status in the U.S., reaching No. 27 on the Billboard Hot 200.

27 years later, the long-awaited follow up collection will differ greatly from its predecessor. The Tracks II box set will feature tracks recorded between 1983 and 2018, 74 of which have never been released in any form previously. The collection consists of seven full-length albums, as opposed to a selection mostly comprised of bits and pieces from known material left on the studio’s cutting room floor. Each individual album will have their own title and cover.

The individual albums, in order of the periods they are from, include LA Garage Sessions ’83, Streets of Philadelphia Sessions, Faithless, Somewhere North of Nashville, Inyo, Twilight Hours and Perfect World. When Tracks II was announced Thursday, Springsteen released Rain in the River as a little teaser ahead of the collection’s June debut. In addition to the single, he and Sony also released a trailer for the collection, with The Boss himself talking about the set and a brief look at the covers for the albums.

“I often read about myself in the ’90s as having some lost period or something, and not really; really, I was working the whole time,” Springsteen said in the trailer. “During the pandemic, what I did for that period of time was I finished everything I had in my vault. So this is Tracks II. The Lost Albums are records that were full records, some of ’em even to the point of being mixed and not released for one reason or another, [because of] something I felt was missing from some of them, or they just didn’t feel complete at the time.”

The physical box set of the collection will feature a 100-page hard-cover book, consisting of archival photos, liners notes for each album and a personal introduction to the records written by Springsteen.

For the fans that aren’t in a hurry to wade through 83 new songs, Springsteen trimmed the fat with a simultaneously-planned release of Lost and Found: Selections From the Lost Albums. The selection will consist of 20 songs from Lost II, released the same day in CD and double-LP format.
