HALIFAX, Va. – A 3-year-old boy accidentally shot and killed himself early Tuesday in Halifax, Virginia, authorities said.

According to WDBJ and WSLS, the incident occurred shortly before 1 a.m. at a Halifax Road home. Halifax police arrived to find a young child who had been shot, the news outlets reported. The toddler later died at a nearby hospital, authorities said.

Virginia State Police, who are now in charge of the investigation, believe the boy unintentionally shot himself, WDBJ reported. Three adults and another child who were home when the shooting occurred were not harmed, police said.

No one has been charged in connection with the incident, according to the news outlets. Medical examiners will perform an autopsy on the child, police said.
