CHESTER, Pa. – A high school was expecting a delivery of textbooks and supplies, but instead it received rifles.

Packages delivered Friday and locked inside the school over the weekend were revealed to contain weapons when a FedEx driver returned to correct the mistake on Monday, WCAU reported.

In a letter to the community, Chester Upland School District’s superintendent Craig Parkinson said that the boxes did not appear suspicious, and that it is standard practice for deliveries to be stored in the loading dock until they are delivered to the proper department, The Delaware County Times reported.

“When deliveries come in, we check everything,” Kevin Thomas, a maintenance employee at Chester High School, told WCAU. “Usually, it’s like school supplies. So I don’t think — in the history, nothing like this has ever happened. So it had to be a big misunderstanding, big mistake.”

Police told KYW-TV that six guns, all .30 caliber M1 rifles manufactured by Springfield Armory, were all packaged in separate boxes.

“The driver was you can see visibly concerned and very professional, very, apologetic,” Parkinson told KYW-TV. “He definitely made it clear that it was a mistake.”

An address mix-up led to the mistake. The guns were destined for an auto mechanic shop on West 9th street in Chester Township, while Chester High School’s address is on West 9th Street in the city of Chester, KYW-TV reported.

Chester Police Commissioner Steven Gretsky told WCAU that officers checked and found that the guns had been purchased legally by a gun collector, and that no charges would be filed.
