LeBron James to make sure polls have enough workers this November

LeBron James is making sure that anyone who wants to vote can do so. His More Than A Vote voting rights organization is now making sure that all polls have enough workers, especially in Black communities.

More Than A Vote is seeking young activists to man polling locations during the general election in November. They’re focusing on battlegrounds in Georgia, Michigan, Wisconsin, Florida, Ohio, North Carolina, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Texas.

“There are a lot of people who grew up in the inner city who are afraid to vote,” James said recently, according to ABC News. “We’re giving everyone the tools, outlets.”

James’ group includes other celebrities and has partnered with the NAACP Legal Defense Fund and will kick off with a paid advertising campaign and a program to partner with businesses to allow employees to volunteer to work at polls for Election Eay, The New York Times reported.

During primary elections, and amid the coronavirus pandemic, long lines stretched for hours.

Milwaukee had only five voting locations in a city that normally has 180, ABC News reported.

The reason was attributed to the lack of poll workers, the Times reported.

Atlanta had issues from the moment polls opened in June. Some machines didn’t work and voters said there were not enough paper ballots, WSBTV reported.

Polls were still allowed to be open hours after normal closing times.
