According to the Dorchester County Sheriff’s Office, deputies went to a home in Ridgeville at about 12:40 p.m. local time, WCBD-TV reported.

Deputies said they observed several people under a large canopy gathered around a cockfighting ring, with roosters actively fighting, according to the television station.

Sheriff’s Lt. Rick Carson told WCSC-TV that deputies called for backup while some of the people under the canopy fled into the woods.

In addition to the 18 arrests, deputies issued 35 citations, the television station reported.

Members of animal control collected the carcasses of the roosters and are processing the live roosters confiscated at the scene, WCSC reported.
