Meghan Markle becomes first modern British royal to cast vote in American presidential election
MONTECITO, Calif. – Meghan, Duchess of Sussex, has become the first modern British royal to cast a vote in an American presidential election, multiple outlets are reporting.
People magazine and USA Today, each citing an unnamed source with knowledge of the duchess’ plans, said the 39-year-old U.S. citizen, who married Britain’s Prince Harry in 2018, voted in the election between President Donald Trump and former Vice President Joe Biden. Neither outlet could confirm further details, such as whether she voted early, on Election Day, in person or via absentee ballot from her home. The outlets also did not confirm which candidate the duchess, formerly known as Meghan Markle, supported.
Earlier this year, Meghan and Harry, 36, stepped back from their royal duties and moved to Southern California with their baby boy, Archie, People reported.
In 1937, another American, Wallis Simpson, wed Britain’s Edward VIII, who was king but abdicated the throne to marry her, according to People and USA Today. It is unclear whether she ever took part in a U.S. presidential election, the outlets reported.
