Campus officials with the Northside Independent School District in San Antonio said the incident occurred at Earl Warren High School, KENS-TV reported.

Initially, administrators were notified that the student had an illegal substance in his backpack, Northside ISD spokesperson Barry Perez told WAOI-TV.

When school district police searched the backpack they found the weapon, KSAT-TV reported.

The student never brandished the weapon on campus, and no threat was made toward the campus or any students, officials confirmed to the television station.

“I share this information with you in the spirit of transparency but also to assure you that disciplinary and criminal action will be taken swiftly,” Principal Melissa Hurst told parents in an automated message. “We will continue to remain vigilant to ensure our campus is safe.”
