Goodyear Police Department said Jesse Michael Scott, 32, allegedly rear-ended a car near Estrella Parkway and Romley Road on Thursday, according to KSAZ.

Scott allegedly tried to choke out the man driving, who was reportedly able to fight back and call 911 for help. The victim’s two toddlers were in the back seat of the car when the attack happened, according to KSAZ.

The man told dispatch that he had gotten into an accident and the other driver was attacking him, according to KTVK. Officers responded to the area and detained Scott.

Scott allegedly admitted to crashing his Dodge Charger into the 2021 Dodge Durango, saying “the devil took over him,” according to KTVK. He also reportedly said he “stopped listening to God.”

The impact of the crash caused the Durango to spin into the road. Inside that car was the man, his 1-year-old son and his 3-year-old daughter, according to KTVK.

GPD said that Scott allegedly attacked the man in the Durango and began choking him to the point where he was starting to lose consciousness but was eventually able to break free, according to KTVK.

Scott was injured from fighting in the attack and was taken to the hospital. He was released a few hours later and police conducted a follow-up interview where he allegedly told them that his name was now Jesus, according to court records obtained by KTVK. He also allegedly said that when he saw the Durango, he heard a voice say, “to get him,” which led up to the crash.

Court records obtained by KTVK said that Scott had allegedly admitted to intending to kill the driver and that he had no idea the children were in the car.

Scott has been charged with a count of attempted murder and three counts of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon, according to KTVK.

No further information has been released.
